What is CT?

A CT (i.e. computer tomography) scan is a radiological procedure used to detect and screen for disease. The CT scanner uses X-rays to produce anatomically precise images of the areas of the body that can be examined and the results are evaluated by a radiologist. CT scans allow areas of the body to be examined in a way that other diagnostic imaging techniques (ultrasound, MRI, X-ray) can not. CT is an excellent way of examining the skull, spine, neck, chest, lungs, abdomen, pelvis, heart, limbs and vascular system. Computed tomography breaks down a body part into slices of a few millimetres and then uses X-rays to map these slices. The X-rays travel through the human body and are absorbed in individual tissues. When the composition of a tissue changes, its ability to transmit radiation also changes, so lesions are clearly visible on the scans. The rays passing through the tissue are picked up by an X-ray detector and the signals are converted into images by the machine. The CT scan is completely painless and usually takes only 10-20 minutes. Even though the CT machine uses X-rays, this is only a low exposure of the human body, so the diagnosis it makes goes beyond the strain of the scan.

When is a CT scan necessary?

A CT scan is usually recommended when physical or other diagnostic tests (MRI, ultrasound, X-ray) have not given a clear diagnosis. CT scans are recommended for the detection of inflammatory diseases and to assess the condition of the facial skull and nasal cavity. It is excellent for detecting or ruling out neurological and skeletal diseases. CT scans can detect vasoconstriction and vascular occlusion. It is recommended in case of accidents, injuries, to assess the condition of soft tissues and bones. The CT scan can be used to make an accurate diagnosis of suspected tumours and abnormalities in any part of the body and to assess the effectiveness of therapy. Since Margit Medical Center can also provide immediate results, a diagnosis can be made as quickly as possible.

How to prepare for the examination?

The examination is painless, safe and quick, so no special preparation is required. It is advisable not to eat for 2 hours before the test. The contrast CT scan can be done on an empty stomach. This way if it is found during the scan that contrast is still necessary, there is no need to repeat the scan on an empty stomach at a later time. Contrast material injected into a vein is largely eliminated from the body through the kidneys, so plenty of fluids is recommended before and after the test (2.5-3.5 litres of water or sugar-free fluids per day). For these reasons, it is important to know before the test whether the kidneys are functioning normally, so a laboratory test no more than one month old is needed, which should include a renal function test. It is a good idea to wear comfortable clothing to the test.

What happens during the investigation?

The test is performed in the supine position. It is important that the patient remains still during the scan. During the CT scan, the examination bed is occasionally slid in and out of the machine while the sensor rotates around the patient several times. On average it takes 10-20 minutes to scan a region. The patient must always follow the instructions given during the scan for example on how to breathe or swallow. Our staff communicate with the patient through a loudspeaker during the scan. Our colleague will signal the end of the examination. The patient can then be moved from the position in which he/she has been placed.

When is it necessary to give contrast material?

For certain CT scans, contrast material is necessary. The contrast material used during the scan is a drug called iodine, which is injected into the vein. The amount of contrast agent is determined per kilogram of body weight to ensure that the body is not overloaded. It is necessary in certain cases because it helps to visualise blood vessels and soft tissues, allowing a more accurate diagnosis of the lesions, their size and location. It is always up to the doctor to decide which cases require contrast material.

Are there any side effects or risks?

There is minimal exposure to radiation. Contrast material ingested during the scan may in some cases produce diarrhoea symptoms, which is normal. In rare cases, the iodinated contrast agent administered may cause complications, including an allergic reaction, which is mild. However it is also important to stress that the risk of allergic reaction to contrast agents is much lower than the consequences of not diagnosing a serious disease.

When can the test not be performed?

Contrary to misconceptions CT scans can be performed without risk even with a pacemaker. CT scans cannot be performed above a body weight of 150 kg, in which case a consultation with your doctor is necessary.

In the case of hypothyroidism, a recent endocrinological examination (no more than 3 months old) is recommended before the scan.

As imaging is performed by X-ray machine, CT scans are not performed during pregnancy. If the patient is pregnant or suspected to be pregnant, it is always important to report it in advance.

How long does the examination take?

The CT scan takes on average 10-20 minutes, depending on the area to be scanned. It is important that the patient remains still during this time and follows the instructions given through the speaker accurately.

When can I expect the results?

The CD with the recordings is given to the patient immediately after the test. It usually takes 3-5 working days to receive the results, as they are analysed by a radiologist. However at Margit Medical Center it is possible to receive the results immediately. It is important to make this known before the examination so that the results can be available within 24 hours.
